BEGBIE AT THE FRINGELight Line and Form Detail

David Begbie’s installation of “light Line and Form” in the Assembly rooms in George Street will feature in the Edinburgh Fringe programme as well as forming part of the Edinburgh Art Festtival (EAF) now in its second successful year.

An internationally renowned sculptor, Begbie has exhibited all over the world and his work is held in many important private corporate and public collections, yet he has never before shown in his birthplace and the EAF presents the perfect opportunity for him to show in the capital for the first time

When Sheilagh Tennant approached him with the idea of showing an installation in the Assembly Rooms, this gave him the chance to return to a work originally conceived years ago. This work is absolutely in the spirit of The Festival Fringe, a well established forum for raw and expressive ideas. So it would seem particularly apt for this sculpture to be shown in the Assembly Rooms, which during the last 25 years, has established itself as the prime Fringe Venue and has now expanded to include Assembly Hall as well as St George's West Church and Queen's Hall.

Sheilagh Tennant will be showing smaller recent works by Begbie in a special festival exhibition in the Arts Centre Peebles just outside the city, that will also feature the work of Caribbean born painter Sophie Barnard. Though their work is quite diverse, both Bgebie and Barnard are fascinated by the constantly shifting interplay of light and shadow. Barnard’s sometimes photorealistic work has an intensity of natural colour, whilst Begbie’s use of strategic lighting projected through his sensual figurative steelmesh sculptures creates compelling images which have a strong and dynamic presence.

To mark this installation, Gallery Different in conjunction with Sheilagh Tennant is pleased to offer a Limited Edition of 50 etchings featuring a detail of Light Line and Form. This print will be available to purchase at the Peebles exhibition and from the Assembly Rooms.. Throughout the Festival period (29th July to 29th August) there is an opportunity to purchase. If you wish to reserve your print now please contact us.

As well as being the birthplace of the artist, Edinburgh is also the location of United Wire who supply all of Begbie’s material.
