Exhibition at Van Loon en Simons, Vught, NL

17 March 2011 - 15 May 2011

Galerie Van Loon en Simons have been exhibiting David Begbie's work since they opened their gallery in Vught in 2007. However, David's history of exhibiting with Joris Van Loon goes back to the mid 1990's.

This exhibition is a joint show with surrealist painter Ruud Antonious .  The exhibition opened with a private view on Thursday 17th March 2011 and a public opening on Sunday 20th March 2011.  Both events were well attended and David was very pleased to meet up with some old friends and collectors - and to meet some new friends.

The Exhibition
The first impression of Begbie's artwork suggests that his figurative sculpture falls within the realms of realism, which it certainly does, but when lighting is introduced it enters the world of surrealism in a spectacular way.  Using strategic lighting to create supremely optical compositions of line and form, each transparent sculpture has a greater palpable presence than the space which it occupies.  For this exhibition there are even a number of works that contain elements of the surreal, an interplay of realism and surrealism.  He sets up a paradox by creating from this cold industrial material, delicate, sensual and powerful work that is completely contemporary, but which ultimately is timeless.

The exhibition will continue until 15th May.  David will also exhibit in the Bienale in Vught which opens on 26th May 2011 and ends 12th June 2011.
