“G E N I I”

10th April - 3rd May 2008
Albemarle Gallery, 49 Albemarle Street, London W1
The Albemarle Gallery in London’s West End will present an exhibition of new sculpture by David Begbie opening with a private view on 10th April.  David first met gallery owner Tony Pontone in 2005 through writer and art critic Edward Lucie Smith.  It was an auspicious meeting and over the last three years David has exhibited with the Albemarle Gallery in their Winter and Summer shows and participated in their Tenth Anniversary Show in January 2007. David was subsequently invited to put on a solo show of his new sculpture in the ground floor gallery.

The Exhibition entitled “Genii” reflects the polarities that are obvious in David  work. His contemporary archetypal figurative sculpture encapsulates a series of relationships between male and female, masculinity and femininity, positive and negative, matter and anti-matter, light and dark. The title piece for the show, “Genii” (Angels) is a three-figure composition comprising masculine and feminine characters, flanking an androgynous figure which contains elements of both. In this exhibition Begbie invites us to explore both the relationships between the figures in each sculpture and between the sculptures and their projected shadows.  When projected, the shadow of any work, often appears to show a “darker” side to its character.

The Albemarle gallery has a policy of presenting simultaneous solo shows and will have two other exhibitions opening at the same time for painters Maxwell Doig and Neil Douglas.  All three exhibitions will run until 3rd May 2008.

A fully illustrated catalogue is available at £10 each inc p&p.  Please enquire to obtain invitations or to purchase catalogues.
