Editioned Sculpture

A new and remarkable development in the work of DAVID BEGBIE called “SHADOW SERIES” was launched at GALLERY DIFFERENT on 24th November 2005.

“SHADOW SERIES” focuses his preoccupation of the interplay between light, line and form, resulting in another visually stunning and innovative art form.  It has taken many years to arrive at, and the new series is astonishingly successful.  It contains all of the characteristics of his original forms translated into a series of specially editioned sculpture.

Begbie uses one image, derived from a 3D Steelmesh sculpture, and translates it into the flat Stainless Steel panels. They epitomise sculptural economy and visual succinctness, creating compelling shadows created by lighting, which are bold and completely convincing, achieving the translation beautifully from his Steelmesh work.


This special edition gives admirers and collectors of Begbie’s work an opportunity to purchase at a more attainable price, acquiring a highly collectable art work.

Begbie’s unique Steelmesh work is in high demand, with recent successful exhibitions worldwide leading to a scarcity of the Steelmesh, underlining the purchase of his work to be sound investment.

At present all works are in a suspended format, and we now have the option for a presentation within an easel frame.

David is working on freestanding editioned sculpture attached to a base.

It is a fascinating development in David's work and it will be very exciting to see how his work progresses, both in the next series of editioned work and also in his current Steelmesh work. We are currently engaged in proposals for large scale Public Art projects and the combination of this new technique with his Steelmesh work, will remove previous physical limitations, and will generate some challenging new realisations.

There are a variety of different colours available; Black, Bronze, Silver, Poppy Red, Flourescent Red, Pink, Pink with glitter and the very specially produced mirrored pieces.  The larger Nuud I in black is now completely sold out but there is currently availability in all the other colours and sizes. This year David has produced a new series of editioned work, the "still series" which can be viewed in available work.  Using three 50cm steelmesh pieces, David has taken three different angles and produced both suspended torsos and freestanding pieces all of which have the convincing three dimensional quality.  The video clips in the available work section do illustrate how though they are convincingly three dimensional, they are in reality completely flat.  Astillnuwd III is just one example of this.
