Moving on...
30 June 2006
Gallery Different and David Begbie's steelmesh sculpture has been an integral part of the life of Butler's Wharf for the past 14 years. When David Begbie was invited to exhibit here in 1992, Tower Bridge Piazza was a brand new development, there was no development between London Bridge and Tower Bridge and the shops and restaurants of Butler's Wharf formed a little oasis in the middle of an area of development and regneration. Despite a recession, the exhibition was a resounding success, convincing David to make this his home gallery.
During the past 14 years, Gallery Different (formerly many will remember as Differentiate) has made many friends both from the immediate area and from all over the world. Very many of our friends from abroad make return visits to us and some have been known to fly or cruise via London just to ensure a chance to see David's new work.
It is with mixed feelings then that the gallery bids farewell to the area. We will certainly miss the wonderful location on the river, not to mention all those handy bars and restaurants. However we are also excited and looking forward to establishing the gallery in a more central location in London. We are unable yet to give full details, but please keep your eye on the website and register to receive a newsletter with more information.
David Begbie will however will still retain a presence in Shad Thames, exhibiting with our friends and neighbours McHardy Coombs Sculpture Gallery. Gallery Different and Mchardy Coombs have a close working relationship and over the years have had many collaborative exhibitions. They will be exhibiting David's work over the coming months and years and are planning a solo show for later in the year.
David's new work will be able to be viewed on this website, and should something be of interest we will be arranging viewings either at David's studio or in your own home. If you have a particular interest or would like to be updated with images of new work sent to your email or home, please let us know. If you are not currently on our mailing list, but would like to receive an invitation to our opening show at our new gallery space then please register with your contact details.
The current exhibition "Underwraps" closes on 30th June. The gallery will be open by appointment only on Saturday and Sunday 1st and 2nd July and the last opening day will be Monday 3rd July. Following this viewings of sculpture or etchings or drawings will be by appointment with Karina or James.
