"Burns"

This very interesesting sculpture was produced for the "Inspired" exhibition at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow as part of the homecoming Scotland, celebrating 250 years since the birth of Robert Burns.

Members of David's family have mentioned that there could be an ancestral link to Elizabeth Begbie, the lady who spurned Burns' proposal of marriage.

Ellison Begbie or Elizabeth Gebbie (her given name) was born in 1762, the daughter of a Galston farmer, Thomas Gebbie of Pearsland.    She met Burns around 1780 and he courted her when he lived at Lochlie.   She was employed as a servant at Carnell House (near Cessnock River) and Burns is said to have proposed to her and been rejected.   5 letters from Burns to her are on record.   She married Hugh Brown, a stocking maker, at Newmilns and they had three daughters and a son.  They eventually moved to Glasgow.   She was the heroine of 'The Lass of Cessnock Banks' and probably the 'Peggy Elison' of the song 'And I'll kiss thee yet'   She is also associated by some editors with the song 'Mary Morison'   Her date of death is unknown.
