Gallery Continuum expressive glass & contemporary art

EXHIBITION 22nd March until July 2020

The first contact for every human is being in touch with himself and his own body. This is how our body consciousness develops. The body envelops our self and helps us to get in touch with the outside world.
For sculptor David Begbie and artist Jeff Robb the body is the central theme of their research and development. Combining steelmesh and light David Begbie's weightless sculptures seem immaterial and physically present simultaneously. Artist Jeff Robb uses the technique of lenticular photography to create a two-dimensional print with three-dimensional appearance so that the perception of reality is momentarily interrupted.

Continuum Gallery: A Guided Tour of the Exhibition
’BODY & MIND’
David Begbie und Jeff Robb

A GUIDED TOUR OF THE EXHIBITION

The first contact of every human being is the contact with him or herself and his or her own body. This is how our body consciousness develops. The body envelops our self and changes throughout our lifetimes.
For the sculptor David Begbie as well as for the photographer Jeff Robb the body is the central theme of their artistic work.

David Begbie is primarily concerned with the human anatomy. The idealised bodies of his sculptures reflect the posture, musculature and tension of the human torso in a lifelike manner. Begbie's works seem immaterial, weightless and at the same time physically and fleshly present. The artist shows the power of the male body and the softness of female forms.
His three-dimensional, handmade works are the result of numerous studies with real models. The missing heads and limbs of his sculptures are reminiscent of classical antiquity. But the artistic executions of Michelangelo, Auguste Rodin and Medardo Rosso are also a source of inspiration for Begbie's work.

Begbie's material is a light and air-permeable industrial fabric which, in combination with punctual lighting, creates an anatomically perfect shadow next to the sculpture. The shadow complements the empty fabric shell and gives life to the sculpture. The work fills, although the figure remains empty. The reflections and plays of light create a physical weight and create a figure that materialises in the light. The shadow moves and calls the viewer to go beyond the mechanism of seeing to comprehend.

Jeff Robb is enthusiastic about the technical possibilities and challenges that the lenticular process offers. He experiments with holography and creates lenticular photographs to create three-dimensional images. His most famous subject is the floating female or male nude with its countless forms, compositions and expressions.
Robb's photography is sensual and graceful at the same time, but also strange. The human representations seem to come from another world, which has its own physical laws. The idealised nude floats in space like a three-dimensional marble sculpture; we see strong twists, flowing, soft fabrics and veils shimmering in the photographer's set light. The depiction of the human body is reminiscent of the 16th century Mannerist art style and the works of Tintoretto or Permigianino.

Robb's endeavour is to expand the boundaries of a photograph, to make it more tangible and present, and to place the viewer in a borderline state, far from reality without time and space. These pauses, as Jeff Robb says, are important in his opinion to fuel inspiration.

The distinction I make between art and design is that a design object is utilitarian and designed to be used whereas an art object is ‘useless’ other than being a work of art - as Pablo Picasso once said “The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.
